Fractional leadership

Fractional CMO / VP Marketing

Continuing senior ownership of Marketing priorities, for a company that needs executive judgment and accountability but not, or not yet, a full-time leader.

Problems it addresses

When Marketing Needs an Owner, Not Just More Output.

  • A founder is carrying Marketing personally and needs someone to decide priorities and own them.
  • Agencies or specialists are executing, but nobody is setting direction or connecting their work to Sales.
  • The positioning no longer fits the product, the buyers, or the market the company is moving into.
  • The company is preparing to hire a permanent Marketing leader and needs the foundations in place first.

Responsibility

What a Fractional Leader Owns.

An agreed set of continuing priorities — for example positioning, the Marketing plan and its sequencing, coordination of the people and partners who execute, and how progress is measured. The fractional leader works with the founder and the leadership team as a member of it, not as an outside supplier.

Experience from employed leadership roles is the relevant proof: whole-function Marketing at XYB and TransUnion, and whole-function PMM at Onum.

Conditions

What the Arrangement Needs to Work.

Decision rights
Agreed authority over the priorities in scope, so decisions do not stall.
Access to information
Product, pipeline, customers, and the founder's thinking — the inputs real priorities depend on.
Workable capacity
A scope that matches the time available, and a clear answer to who executes.

Execution

Who Does the Work, and How Progress Is Reviewed.

Execution comes from a combination of the company's team, specialists or agencies, and selected work done directly — including AI-assisted execution where it shortens the path from decision to delivery. A part-time leader cannot personally deliver every Marketing function, and the scope should not assume otherwise.

Scope is set together at the start and reviewed regularly against the priorities agreed, so it can change as the company does.

Choosing the arrangement

Agency, Consultant or Fractional Leader?

An agency
executes a channel or a body of work.
A consultant
answers a bounded question.
A fractional leader
owns continuing priorities and the coordination between them.

These are differences in responsibility, not in quality. The right choice depends on what the company needs someone to own. If the need is a defined decision rather than ongoing ownership, strategic advisory may fit better; if it is full-time ownership, see permanent leadership.
